Boise Noon Optimist Club honors Frank Smoke

Today was a little special, as we honored Frank Smoke, who has sold programs at Boise State football games for the last 37 years.

Dyan Graybeal gaveled the meeting to order at 12: 11.  Kassidy led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Barry Fitzgerald said the Invocation.
SUNSHINE DOLLARS:  Dyan for husband Doug being home after traveling so much for work.  Cindi Wall thanking everyone for the help at the Idaho Famous Potato Bowl.  Rick Peterson because his son Will and wife Jessica bought a duplex.  Gary Arbaugh because he just had his birthday and wedding anniversary.  Gary also put in a plug for "The Great Polar Bear Challenge."   http://idaho.wish.org/2011/11/15/the-great-polar-bear-challenge/
Take a look.   Make a donation.

Our Christmas auction was successful. $1,200 was raised for the Idaho Youth Ranch.  Coats were purchased from The Burlington Coat factory for some girls.  Mark "Sparky "  Anderson said 744 programs were sold at the Idaho Famous Potato Bowl, thus our club received $744.
There will be no meeting next Tuesday Dec 27th.

Boise Noon Optimist News

On this day, Dyan Graybeal gaveled the meeting to order at approximately 12:08 or so. Ken Wall led us in the Pledge Of Allegiance, and Steve Oliver said the Invocation.

Sunshine Dollars: Steve Oliver that Idaho University is the best 2 & 10 football team in the nation. Don Gunner about his daughter graduating from U of I. Walt Callahan about he and wife Barbara being on TV at the Boise Airport. Larry Highley about the need for program sellers at Boise State basketball games. And ... December 17th is the Famous Potato Bowl.

We sang our usual wonderful version of "Happy Birthday" to those who have birthdays in December.

Because of the holiday season, we will not have our usual 4th Tuesday of the month on December 27th at the Casa Mexico.

We had two ladies from St. Luke's MSTI (Mountain States Tumor Institute) to talk to us, Jessica Hardy and Kelsey Breeding.

Jessica and Kelsey

Jessica Hardy spoke of Child Life at MSTI. (Mountain States Tumor Institute) She talked mostly of the program in which we are very involved, "Beads Of Optimism." A program that our own Dyan Graybeal about seven years ago help promote. "There are about 30 kids in active treatment at St. Luke's." Said Jessica. "Many kids with cancer are in and out patients. We have about 50 or so beds for them."

We should be proud of what Dyan Graybeal and our Boise Noon Optimist Club has done!

Newsletter November 1

Dyan Graybeal gaveled the meeting to order at 12:05 PM.  Barry Fitzgerald led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Steve Oliver said the Invocation.

We will have our annual "Rake Up Boise" day on Saturday November 19.  More details later.

Dyan and Sue spoke of  Christmas Auction to be held on the fifth Tuesday of November, Tuesday November 29th.  It will be at the Policeman's Club House,  7311 W Potomac Dr, Boise, ID 83704.

December 10th is our annual MSTI Christmas party.  10:00 AM at the Anderson Center.

Our speaker next Tuesday will be Mike Stanton from Zamzow's.
Our speaker on Nov 15th will be Dee Sarton from KTVB.

Our speaker this day was Boise State's men's tennis coach, Greg Patton.  My gosh what a wonderful inspirational speaker and story teller he is.

From Coach Patton:  "A man dies and is approached by an angel.  The angel asks him what he would like in the afterlife.  The man replies that the wants to play golf every day and shoot scratch golf, he says he wants to win the lottery every week, he wants to look young all the time and be in perfect shape, and have all the women he wants.  The angel grants these wishes.  As time goes by, the man becomes bored, he asks the angel,  'I'm bored, I think I want to go to Hell.'  The angel replies, Sir, you are in Hell!"

Coach Patton's point was that we all need to be challenged.   Excellent!

Coach Patton's favorite film is Moneyball with Brad Pitt as the Oakland A's Billy Bean.  "In that movie, Billy Bean puts together a winning team without much money,  I go through the same thing trying to recruit tennis players, usually the Pac 10 gets all the top players."

BOISE NOON OPTIMIST CLUB NEWSLETTER FOR SEPT 20, 2011

Dyan Graybeal gaveled the meeting to order at 12:11.  Don Gunner led us i the Pledge of Allegiance, and Barry Fitzgerald said the Invocation.

We had two guests this day.  Kristi Halford, who has two boys in the Optimist Youth Football program, and one time BNOC member, Howard Pierce.

Kristi came to our last Board meeting to talk about the football program.  She then accepted my invitation to attend today's meeting/luncheon.
Howard moved to Eugene Oregon from Boise in 1985.  He was a charter member of the BNOC.  He just happened to be in town and he looked us up.  He shook hands with old friends Stub Clarkson and Barry Fitzgerald.  There was lots of talk of the "old days."

Sunshine Dollars:  Dyan has a new granddaughter.  Sue Clarkson about grandson Will getting married.  Howard Pierce about seeing old friends.  And Dixie that her granddaughter is 10.

REMINDER ... Our Annual Installation & Awards Dinner will be held at Jakers in Meridian
(3268 East Pine St) on Sunday October 9th.

Dyan and Jerron reported that the shuttle busses were busy Saturday at the fields.  If you get towed folks, it's $150 to get your car back, and if you delay, every day costs you an extra $50 per.  One coach and two people were "asked to leave."

Sue Clarkson talked about how they passed the bucket to raise money for  some kids on the Meridian High football team.  They raise $617!  It's damn expensive to have a boy play football in High School anymore.  Sad.

Dyan is asking for ideas for the annual MSTI Christmas Party.

Trees are now being sold out at the fields for $275, that includes a concrete post with your name on it.

Don Gunner's ticket was called and he drew an ace to win half of the monstrous $26 pot.

Notes from August 9

Dyan Graybeal gaveled the meeting to order at 12:07.  Barbara Callahan led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Steve Oliver said the Invocation.

Sunshine Dollars:   Larry Highley talked about going to the Yellow Pine Harmonica Festival, which led to a conversation about how good the old Boise River Festival use to be. Rocky Jackson got to see his grandkids.  Dyan Graybeal went rafting with her sister who kept screaming all the way.

The district convention will be on Aug. 24 & 25, in Bellview, Washington with Larry Blackburn from the Nampa Optimists being sworn in as the new Governor.

Financial advisor Dan McQuesten
talks about the economy
A reminder that the annual Jamboree will be Saturday August 20.  As usual, we could use some help out there at Bronco Stadium.  First game is at 8:00 AM.

Our speaker this day was our own Dan McQuesten, who is a financial advisor for UBS Financial Services Inc.  He is also in the Air Force Reserves.

Believe me folks, I tried to keep up with what he was saying, but it was difficult for me sometimes.  So I'll do my best here to report on what he said.

Stub Clarkson reaps a benefit
from his investment today
Dan's main theme was "Not to worry."  Our country is still the best in the world and we will rebound.  We are still the biggest manufacturer in the world, even over China.  America has an abundance of raw materials, as is not the case in China.  Europe could be in trouble though.   The future could show that America will be less powerful, but that's not the worst thing that could happen.  He said by the end of this year, the S&;P will be up 20%.

Dan said that federal tax loop holes need to be closed and that Social Security and Medicare may have to be revalued.  He always tells his clients to try to have a year's worth of pay in cash.

As you can imagine, there was a great deal of discussion from us all.

BOISE OPTIMIST CLUB NEWSLETTER FOR JULY 19, 2011

Co-President Dyan Graybeal gaveled the meeting to order at 12:07 PM.  Rocky Jackson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Stub Clarkson said the Invocation.

SUNSHINE DOLLARS:  Dyan Graybeal commented that 39 people showed up to help with the MSTI "Kids With Cancer" picnic.  Stub Clarkson about his grandson Will having a new boat.  Dyan said we are still collecting old cell phones.  Our club received a thank you note from the Lee Santo family.  Thee was a thought to start a scholarship fund for youth referees under George Santo's name.  Jerron Moore commented on the 7 on 7 competition.

We didn't have a scheduled speaker this day, but as it turned out, Jerron Moore gave a very good presentation about last Friday and Saturday's 7 on 7 high school football competition at the Optimist Youth Complex.  Just talking about how points are scored is impressive.

The pot was $219 this day. Dyan
tried to pull an ACE to win, but
wound up with a king and $10.

Jerron expects this 7 on 7 program to just about double next year.

Eagle High won the varsity group with talented quarterback Tanor Magnuson leading the way.  Centennial won in the junior varsity group.

Youth football may be in jeopardy in the years to come due to financial concerns, Optimist Youth Football just may be the only option available to them.

For this tournament, the concession stand sold only sandwiches, water, Gator Aid, doughnuts and coffee.  It went very well and there was very little waiting in line for the people.

BOISE OPTIMIST CLUB NEWSLETTER FOR MAY 17, 2011

We had a nice turnout this day.  Dyan Graybeal called the meeting to order at 12:08, Sue Clarkson led us in the pledge and Stub Clarkson said the Invocation.  The Clarkson's have recently returned from their winter sojourn to Arizona, it was wonderful to see them!

SUNSHINE DOLLARS    Dyan Graybeal talked about her son racing cars in Meridian, and how much fun it is to spend an evening out there.  She's off to San Diego next week.  Lisa Peterson talked about school being out (She teaches at Boise State) and she has no plans to do any summer teaching.  Good for you Lisa!  Lisa also talked about how wonderful is was to see her parents Clarkson's back with us.  Barbara Callahan talked about our exhausting trip to California a couple of weeks ago.

Dyan again talked of the need of help at the concession stand at the fields this weekend for the President's Cup soccer tournament this Fri (4:30 PM)  Sat (8:30 AM) and Sun (8:30  AM)  And ... A reminder from Dyan that the annual MSTI (Mountain States Tumor Institute)  picnic for kids with cancer will be held Saturday July 9th at Municipal Park. More later!

Kevin Kluckhohn has been involved with a great program called HOBY  (Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership)  This amazing program helps the teenagers of Idaho.

HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences. HOBY also provides adults with opportunities to make a significant impact on the lives of youth by volunteering.

Under the leadership of Kevin, our Club, along with the Caldwell Optimists, will hold the annual HOBY picnic Saturday June 18th.  It will be held at the Boone Memorial Presbyterian Church, 406 S. 14th Ave.  Caldwell, ID 83605.  Honest ... just being with these great teenagers is quite an experience.  They are wonderful!

Again .. One major point that was raised was the funds being spent on outside groups to man the concession stand during the Optimist Youth Football season. The concession stand is the Boise Noon Optimist Club's main source of income for the year and we've been spending a lot of money on others to run it. Sooo ... we are asking people in the club and those connected with the OYF to PLEASE volunteer to work one four hour shift per season.

Yes, a small group, but we were all so pleased to see Lisa Peterson and Jim Throop and Bud Aune even walked in!  yes, Bud walked in ... no more motorized wheel chair.

This was one of those days when a whole lot of intelligent conversation was going on.

Lisa Peterson's ticket was pulled and she won $9.00!

Next Tuesday we meet at the Casa Mexico on Fairview & Five Mile at about 6:30 PM.

"More people have been killed in Mexico trying to get drugs to America than have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined!"

Yours in Optimism, Walt & Barbara Callahan
